Transfer speeds over SMB are much slower than over AFP, what can I do?

Are you using the OS X client and experiencing much slower transfer speeds over SMB? This is likely due to an OS X bug related to Badlock, about which you can read more here.

The way to fix it is fairly easy. Check the /etc folder for a file named nsmb.conf. If it exists, edit the value for signing_required from yes to no. If it doesn't exist, run the following commands:

sudo -s
echo "[default]" >> /etc/nsmb.conf
echo "signing_required=no" >> /etc/nsmb.conf

That's all. Restart the computer, remount the share and SMB speeds should now match those over AFP.
