Glossary

4K
4K resolution - a raster of 3840 × 2160 when using a 16:9 aspect ratio. Originally used exclusively for film DI work, more and more digital cameras are now able to capture at 4K and beyond natively. Often saved as an image sequence, such as DPX.

Application Server - a software framework that provides both facilities to create web applications and a server environment to run them.
AC
Access Control - Allows file(s) and directory(ies) to own all permissions.
ACL
Access Control List - a list of permissions attached to an object. An ACL specifies which users or system processes are granted access to objects, as well as what operations are allowed on given objects.
AD
Active Directory - a directory service that Microsoft developed for Windows domain networks and is included in most Windows Server operating systems as a set of processes and services.
AFP
Apple Filing Protocol - Network protocol that provides access to files in Mac OS X.
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol - a telecommunication protocol used for resolution of network layer addresses into link layer addresses, a critical function in multiple-access networks.
CHAP
Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol - Basic authentication used by host and target to authenticate each other via the exchange of a secret code or password.
CIFS
Common Internet File System - Another term for the original Windows SMB protocol. As of SMB2's release in 2006, the term has been depreciated.
CLI
Command Line Interface - Text-based input for a system, most typically the GNU/BASH program in Linux
